Tryptophan-kynurenine pathway as a novel link between gut microbiota and schizophrenia: A review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Gut microbiota and its metabolite tryptophan play an important role in regulating neurotransmission, immune homeostasis oxidative stress which are critical for brain development. The kynurenine pathway is the main route of catabolism. Kynurenine metabolites regulate many biological processes including host-microbiome communication, immunity stress, as well neuronal excitability. accumulation produced by results activation system (increase levels inflammatory factors) (production reactive oxygen species, ROS), associated with mental disorders, example schizophrenia. Thus, it was hypothesized that perturbations could cause immunity, may be involved etiology present work a review latest studies on possible schizophrenia, mechanism(s) involved.

The Kynurenine Pathway As a Novel Link between Allergy and the Gut Microbiome

In the past few decades, the indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase (IDO) subset of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway of tryptophan (TRP) metabolism has been the subject of much research in the area of immune tolerance. In this review, we aim to incorporate new findings on this pathway in relation to allergy and the gut microbiome, while providing a comprehensive overview of the pathway itself. Stimulated by i...

Melancholic microbes: a link between gut microbiota and depression?

There is a growing awareness of the potential for microbiota to influence gut-brain communication in health and disease. A variety of strategies have been used to study the impact of the microbiota on brain function and these include antibiotic use, probiotic treatments, fecal microbiota transplantation, gastrointestinal infection studies, and germ-free studies. All of these approaches provide ...

Imbalanced Kynurenine Pathway in Schizophrenia

Several studies suggest a role for kynurenic acid (KYNA) in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. It has been proposed that increased brain KYNA levels in schizophrenia result from a pathological shift in the kynurenine pathway toward enhanced KYNA formation, away from the other branch of the pathway leading to quinolinic acid (QUIN). Here we investigate the levels of QUIN in cerebrospinal flui...

SCHIZOPHRENIA IN TRANSLATION Cortical Kynurenine Pathway Metabolism: A Novel Target for Cognitive Enhancement in Schizophrenia

The brain concentration of kynurenic acid (KYNA), a metabolite of the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan degradation and antagonist at both the glycine coagonist site of the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR) and the a7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (a7nAChR), is elevated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of individuals with schizophrenia. This increase may be clinically relevant because h...
